Thompson Rivers University is BC’s fourth largest provincial university and is also the home of Thompson Rivers University Open Learning (TRU OL). Situated in the BC Centre for Open Learning located on TRU’s Kamloops campus, TRU OL offers distance education courses and programs to students across the country and beyond.

TRU Open Learning has helped lead the development, implementation and coordination of open learning opportunities in BC. Open learning refers to the flexible approach to delivering courses or programs by distance, with the goal of increasing access to learning opportunities. TRU OL is committed to accessibility, opportunity and flexibility in education. North Island College serves a population of 160,000 within a geographic region of 80,000 square kilometres, including Northern Vancouver Island and the B.C. mainland coast from Desolation Sound to Klemtu. This region encompasses six school districts: Central Coast, Alberni, Comox Valley, Campbell River, Vancouver Island West and Vancouver Island North.

Some courses may be taken without attending at a campus or centre. Instructors and students at different locations communicate by telephone, mail, fax and computer. Online Delivery Method

Online learning is an option for students who wish to learn in their own environment using technology and/or the Internet. Online learning allows students to learn on their own time and convenience while also connecting with others. Course materials are available online and technology is used to communicate with peers and instructors, and to submit assignments. Online courses also require students to order textbooks.

Online courses may be lock step or flexible.

The majority of online courses are offered through BCcampus. BCcampus is an online educational service that connects students and online courses across British Columbia. NIC students, as well as students from other institutions in BC, may register in NIC and other BC post-secondary institution courses through BCcampus.

Malaspina University-College is a comprehensive, primarily four-year, postsecondary institution serving the central Vancouver Island and coastal BC region. BCIT offers a wide range of business, computing, sciences, trades, health, engineering and technology programs. Douglas College is one of the largest community colleges in BC, serving students from throughout the Lower Mainland. It has campuses in New Westminster and Coquitlam. The college offers a wide variety of programs including 9 bachelor’s degrees, 35 career programs, 500 university transfer courses, plus vocational upgrading and college preparatory programs. Students may also access career, educational and personal counselling, prior learning assessment and recognition services and Co-operative Education. Special services for disabled students are also available.

FACILITY/SERVICE HIGHLIGHTS: Douglas College recently opened a $36 million Health Sciences Centre at the Coquitlam Campus.

The Centre for Sport, Recreation and Wellness coordinates varsity sports, in-house recreational and wellness programs and programs for national coaching certification. The David Lam Campus in Coquitlam is located next to a major community centre that houses a gymnasium, playing fields, aquatic centre and cultural centre.

Northwest Community College (NWCC) is an accredited public post-secondary education institution that offers a range of comprehensive courses and programs to the northwest region of British Columbia. It serves this area through campuses in Haida Gwaii (Qay’llnagaay, Masset, and Queen Charlotte), Hazelton, Houston, Kitimat, Nass Valley, Prince Rupert, Smithers, Stewart and Terrace. NWCC celebrates the diversity of its northern and First Nations populations and reflects this diversity in its programs, services and workforce.

University of British Columbia - Okanagan (UBC) is located in Kelowna BC and is a new addition to the Vancouver based university.  UBC Okanagan is located only minutes from downtown Kelowna. It offers a wide range of interdisciplinary and integrated programs that let learners explore connections between diverse areas of study. UBC Okanagan offers undergraduate students small class sizes, co-operative education and research opportunities. In addition first-year orientation programs and a variety of student services enhance the learning experience at UBC Okanagan.
