A Pirate Looks at Dextarrrity

Before viewing our submission this week, we feel it is vital to read the following explanation.

Some of you may think our use of humour in answer to the serious subject matter at hand is uncalled for. We disagree. Our simulation of a loss in dexterity involved one of our team members impeding the use of their dominant hand for an average day, and experiencing the adaptation of those who actually have dexeterity issues. So why did we choose pirates?

In a hypothetical situation, how would you feel if you saw someone who is usually able- bodied walking around in normal clothes with a coat hangar taped to their arm? We all agreed that it could be very offensive behaviour. Same scenario, but the person is dressed as a pirate. Very little offense, because pirates with hook hands are a Hollywood archetype and not unfamiliar to those with social context. We felt using an archetype like a pirate narrowed the chances of causing offense, and we certainly hope that we caused none through our use of humour to address a serious topic. We hope that our message is clear, in that we feel those with different levels of ability are competent individuals and we should remember they are fully capable of independence.

Oh yeah, Fraser really can play "A Pirate looks at 40" by Jimmy Buffet on the guitar with a hook hand.

Extremely sorry about the quality of the overnarration. We really have no idea why it became so distorted, and we only had the time for one complete take. If necessary, we can provide a transcript for those who cannot hear it well enough.

Okay, I'm very impressed

Okay, I'm very impressed with the guitar thing.

I very much enjoyed your brand of humor in this video--it makes the topic both amusing and adds a dimension to it that most people don't consider. Your comments on how the public would view someone dressing as a pirate versus someone with a hook is very true.

Awesome job!

Nicely done, again.
It's a different take on the topic along with - of course - demonstrating day-to-day activities. I thought it was well done.
And the contrast between the Gamecube and the Wii made me smirk, especially Fraser's 'en garde' stance on the latter.

Very creative - and

Very creative - and demonstrated not only exploration of the dexterity continuum, but also the continuum of sense of humour (or sense of adventure?). Great range of exploration through the team forum as well - not only of the dexterity continuum, but also the nature of a continuum as multi-dimensional, and the issue of what constitutes "universal" design. I was also impressed that you managed to maintain the pirate theme throughout the week and into your final submission. Well done!

Good Stuff!

Your humorous approach to the subject gave your topic a fresh, new take.

I really enjoyed your video!

fantastic & *funny*

... and here we see another fantastic production from League of Notions. Really, I laughed until my office-mate came over to see if I was ok. Your narration was good (audio a little off, as you noted); Fraser's acting was amazing! He looks like the real (??) Last of Barrett's Privateers.

I don't think your decision to use a pirate to illustrate an extreme loss of manual dexterity was offensive in any way. My only critique was that your presentation focussed mainly on PERSONAL adjustments to ability loss, rather than ENVIRONMENTAL adaptations or universal design. You made up for it with bonus points for extreme effort to generate dialogue. It's been such a pleasure to follow your work over the past 6 weeks!

Well, the year wasn't 1778, and I'm pretty sure Nobby wasn't from Sherbrooke.

I may or may not get this song stuck in my head on a weekly basis.

picky details

OK ok, so maybe the time (2008 vs 1778) & the place (Vancouver vs. Halifax) aren't exactly accurate. Maybe the causal situation was different. A privateer is not EXACTLY a pirate (though close). And yeah, sure, maybe Barrett's privateer lost both his legs while Nobby lost a hand. But *otherwise* the characters bear an uncanny resemblance.

Ahhh, Knobby. Will you ever win???

No need to apologize for the humorous slant. After all, if we can't laugh at hooks-for-hands Pacific coast pirates, who CAN we laugh at???

A solid production. Very nifty video composition, and good content presentation. Nice choice of musical score, too. Probably the best convergence of meeting requirements vs. demonstrating technical aptitude I've seen from your group.

Great character development, too. I can't wait for the sequel to see of Knobby gets his revenge on the evil Harbour Airrrrr floatplane.

And you'll always get bonus marks from me for referencing video games. I'm sure Nintendo had fully considered the lucrative "pirate amputee" market when designing the Wii, though.

What a great way to finish your participation in these challenges...

It's Been Good To Know Ya, Me Hearties!

Ok, I'll spare you any more pirate speak before you make me walk the plank.

I love your sense of humour, League...have done ever since I saw your team name...so you need not apologize to me for using it. We should all take ourselves a little less seriously, sometimes.

A solid submission this week, though the sound suffered, as you know, and some of the video scenes were a bit dark. Hard not to be engaged, though. I thought you could have gotten in a bit closer to show the hook flailing around at times...I could barely make it out.

I think you'll be hearing from the folks at PETA for the segment on rabbit fishing, though. ;o)

I will miss your witty repartee and creative submissions. Good luck with your bright futures!

(That was a groan-worthy pirate pun, Fraser. But awesome none the less.)
