Remote Reconsidered

March 12, 2008 - 9:32pm — LYip

The TV remote shown in the "before" image poses challenges for users with visual impairment, limited dexterity and possibly, users with varying mental capabilities. The buttons, numbers and text are small and the buttons are placed very close together. The remote is covered with numerous buttons, some of them for complex and rarely used functions. There is no colour contrast between the buttons and the remote itself.

The remote in the "after" image considers a wider range of users and Universal Design's principles of equitible and simple and intuitive use. I have changed the shape of the remote for easier grip, made the buttons larger and placed them further apart for users with limited dexterity. I have provided additional visual and auditory cues for users with visual impairment: the buttons light up and emit different tones when pushed. Universal symbols such as "power", "play", "pause", etc. are in a larger font on the buttons and slightly raised. Button selections are displayed on a the screen so users are given confirmation of the selections made. I have made the buttons and symbols a different colour from the remote to provide greater contrast and make the buttons and functions easier to see. Functions have been simplified and those that are rarely or never used have been eliminated from the remote.

Thinking about remotes...

I like the design.

Thinking about this remote and the one before (I am a linear person and am reading from left to right, top to bottom) - what about raised ledges on the buttons for blind people? Or a voice activation system??
