Sweat Lodge

March 2, 2008 - 8:56pm — Station

One plant that is found in traditional Secwepemc territory that we find here in Alberta as well is the Wolf Willow. In the summer we find a great use for this flexible shrub by using it to build the frame of a sweat lodge. Originally I learned about this ceremony from a Stoney and Cree native historian on a work camp near Kootenay Plains AB and have used it consistenly ever summer since.
After doing some research I found that the Secwepemc people also preformed the Sweat Lodge ceremony as well. The sweat lodge is a cleansing ceremony which many claim that it cleans the mind and body. There are many methods and traditions surrounding this ceremony but I'm going to give you the simple steps to create your own back yard sweat lodge.

1) Find a larger wolf willow shrub and cut 8 large poles
2) Using twine or cord lash the poles together to create 4 Large poles
3) Sharpen the ends of each pole
4) Impale one pole into the ground and then bend the other end of the pole towards the ground impaling this end as well to create a perfect rainbow shape. Repeat this step with the remaining poles using the middle of the rainbow as a focal point, spreading the frame around in a circle.
5) Dig a small pit undernead the frame (1 ft x 1 ft) in which to place the rocks.
7) Using a large tarp, cover the frame and either peg, weigh down with rocks, or lash the tarp down, creating a seal to the ground where no steam will escape.
8) Start a fire outside the Sweat lodge. Make sure the fire is extremly hot with lots of coals. Place six larger round rocks into the fire and let sit until red hot (make take 1-2 hrs, use limestone or granite)
9) Using a shovel or pair of thongs relocate the rocks to the pit in the sweat lodge.
10) Grab your bucket of water, seal yourself into the lodge, and sparingly pour cups of water over the hot rocks until you reach your desired temperature.

Note: Placing sage or sweat grass on the rocks also makes for an enjoyable aroma. Never use rocks already heated in the fire for a 2nd sweat lodge.

This ceremony is simple, relaxing, and benifits your health. Its great for the lungs and great for your skin. Be sure to bring a bottle of drinking water in with you as you'll be sure to sweat.
