The Power of Nature

February 24, 2008 - 8:53pm — vanessam

I took this
photo during my travels. It captures a fascinating, but potentially
devastating, natural phenomenon. It also represents one of the many possible
sources of renewable energy. In 2004, a research facility was built - near
where this photo was taken – in order to research the potential of harnessing
the power that created this phenomenon. This facility is the only one of its
kind in the world.

Can you
figure out what this photo captures and where it was taken?

It doesn't seem possible

It doesn't seem possible but...it makes me think of the bottom of the ocean.

Well, I haven't travelled to the bottom of the ocean, but you're actually on to something with that thought...

You got me, Rex!

The window looks a lot like a porthole to me...and the colour seems right...could it be the ocean itself?

I know there are some Tidal barrages, fences and turbines. That would make more than one facility though. Hmm. Or perhaps rather than tidal power, we could be talking about wave power. I know UVic has been involved in a project that tries to translates the motion of waves into electricity. I haven't heard of any facilities made like that though...
This is a toughie!

It is indeed a porthole.

It is indeed a porthole.

Fantastic

Wow - shades of a turbulent Mars. This picture brought out a distant memory of a Scientific American photo series of the 'red planet'. Being able to harness the energy that abounds around us has been a fascination of mine - thanks for bringing it out for me!

Whatever it is, it's

Whatever it is, it's awesome. Like, oldschool awesome. Gigantic and powerful and stunning. Not like a hot dog.

My guess (very slightly educated) is that there's a big sandstorm outside that window and that Egypt could pull a lot of power out of it if they can build turbines that'll hold up to the relentless abuse.

Thanks. No it's not Egypt.

Thanks.
No it's not Egypt. I've been to other parts of the world too. Colder parts. That have different kinds of storms...

My second guess would be that it's snow and somewhere about Siberia, but I'm not sure that I'm allowed more guesses.

Not Siberia either, but

Not Siberia either, but you're closer to the correct latitude.

My guess

It looks like a magnetic or sunspot rendering of the sun, which might explain the dangerous part.

The Answer:

This is actually the view from my cabin porthole while crossing the North Sea, heading towards the Orkney Islands. We were in a sailing vessel and the waves were so high the windows were leaking on the highest deck. When I took this photo, we were being tossed around by hurricane force winds.

The energy I was thinking of was wave energy, and the research facillity is the European Marine Energy Centre in Orkney (http://www.emec.org.uk/). Brianna, you were pretty much correct. Just needed the right location.

Thanks for all your guesses. (It does look like a planet, doesn't it?)

A Mystery Indeed!

Hi there Vanessam

Looking at this picture, I was struck by three thoughts:

1) It's the ocean

2) It's undersea frozen methane found in the Hecate Straits of BC

3) It's the planet Neptune

I was actually thinking #2 and then I found out it was indeed a porthole looking underwater. Very cool.
