Inverted Worlds

February 24, 2008 - 5:33pm — jas17

Hi everybody! I wish I had learned about this site earlier! I would have done the other challenges!

Oh well, here's my submission: It's a short narrative about how I went about tackling this challenge.

Here goes nothing!

 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As I set out on this task,  I said to myself, “What around me is mysterious and intriguing?” I kept my little point-and-shoot camera poised and ready to capture my big mystery. As I waited by the bus stop on the way to school, I began my search. I scanned left to right, up and down and around. I couldn't find anything. There were no mysterious aliens, paranormal events, or anything remotely strange.

After a few days of finding nothing, I began to feel frustrated with my results (or rather, the lack thereof). As the deadline for the contest grew near, I began to feel desperate. I consulted a friend who has been known to “think different”. He told me, “maybe what you're looking for is right under your lens; try looking a little harder for your mystery.” I took his advice with me on the next day of school. Waiting by that familiar bus stop, I once again looked for my scoop. I scanned left to right, up and down and around. It was the same scenery I had seen everyday, but this time it was somehow... different. I started to take pictures of anything and everything: The scarlet red mailbox standing tall and proud. The faded fence bleached by the sun's rays. The pine tree whose branches protruded into the sidewalk, glistening with the morning dew. It felt as if even though they were there everyday, that was the first time I had truly seen them.

Feeling satisfied with my pictures (and my battery empty), I pocketed away my camera for the day. When I finally arrived home, I reviewed my photos to select one for submission. And then, I found it. In the ordinary scenery I visited every day, my mystery that had eluded me all this time appeared right in front of me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------  Can you find the mystery in this everyday scenery? This is my challenge to you. Stay sharp and have fun! Hint: Zoom in.

Inverted Reflection in water drops?

Would it be the inverted reflection in the water drops?

Virginia's picture

echo the reflection

This was my guess also (but you beat me by a few minutes), the reflection in the droplets? By the way, beautiful picture!

jas17's picture

Correct!

Yes! You are both correct, it is the reflection in the water droplets. Note how each water droplet captures a different angle of the same thing. Hence: “Inverted Worlds” (plural)

Thanks for taking the time to look at my photo! I hope you had fun reading my story and viewing my picture!

Can you see yourself?

Can you see your own virtual reality reflected in a drop? If so what would our world look like from that side??

Nice pic and message. Makes me want to take closer notice to things that I tend to miss everyday.

At the Edge of Our Perceptions

This picture created plenty of discussion among we poor audience judges. Reviewing these images wasn't easy; there's a strong streak of subjectivity which we really tried to keep in balance. There were some really great audience entries and it took much time to carefully review them.

So why did we give the nod to this picture? Well, there was something mysterious and 'otherworldly' in this image. I felt that I was perceiving another world at the veil of our own everyday existence (I know, I know. Quelle Twilight Zone!). Doug observed the background reflected in the water droplets hanging from the branches gave it a mysterious quality. After going back and forth a few times, we decided this picture was our choice for first place this week.

Being a good ping pong player helps when judging such creative entries!
