When Ghosts Come Out To Play

February 24, 2008 - 5:25pm — Madjacklogic

Hello Sleuthers!

My Mystery Pictures come courtesy of B.C’s Most Haunted City. I made sure to take them in the daylight as I wouldn’t want to be
around here late at night! This place is surrounded by famous haunted buildings
as well as being haunted itself. Rumor has it that at night, one can hear the shuffling
of feet and the clanking of chains.

Bring your detective skills to bear and identify the place
featured in my picture then use the knowledge of its history to decipher why
you might hear the clanking chains of unhappy ghosts.  For bonus points, identify the two punks in
the 2nd picture as they tend to lurk in the combs of the
Dare2BDigital forums and I think one of them is making a rude gesture at my camera(zoom in on the pic to see their faces).

Here are some extra clues:

-A pub is located right beside this place. It used
to be a doctor’s clinic in pioneer days.

-The 3rd picture was taken right beside
the end of this area. In pioneer times, it used to be a well. The hotel that
owns it has it bricked over but visitors sometimes say they see a
little boy playing around the area before falling into its bricked depths.*NOTE:
I did not alter my photos in any way- this photo creeped me out.

-a famous BC Judge haunts the building across the Square

Answers will be posted Tuesday Afternoon. Good
Luck!!

neighbourhood fun

Okay, I walk right by this area almost every day, and I've never seen the well, but I'm going to look for it now - in the daytime, methinks.

It's hidden away...

Most people don't know it's there because that would mean they'd have to walk under those old arches to the back. I tested the pictures out on a friend and she couldn't get it at first but as soon as I said the name she went "Oh! I know that place!" :D Have fun looking for it!

Haunted Gas Town

I've never been to these locations but by my research I believe it is located in Gas Town? The square you refer to is Maple Tree Square? The hotel I believe is Dominion Hotel and the pub is the Irish Heather Pub? Is the brick Alley Gaoler's Mews and Blood Alley?

Cool looking pictures!

Good try!

But Vancouver is not BC's Most Haunted City. ;)

Bastion Square?

Is it Bastion Square in Victoria? Sir Matthew Baillie Begbie, the Hanging Judge, haunts the Maritime Museum there.
I don't remember seeing the well either. I'll have to watch for it next time I'm there.

I love the photo of the

I love the photo of the well. It's creepy.

I don't know the place, but I recognize the hooligans in the second picture. I bet they're up to no good.

Well...

Wow, and to think I did not object to my daughter working in a nearby law office - if I only knew... ;-)

I know both where it is and

I know both where it is and both the dorks who are in it =)
Also the sordid history of the place, brrrr.
Good vantage point, don't think many people walk at it from that angle!

I am one of the dorks!

I am one of the dorks! Yay!

Also, I know precisely when and where this photo was taken, because, well, I was there. And I know the history behind the Square, as I wrote a lengthy paper on it just last year.

Amazing observational skills!

I'm so glad you can recognize yourself- have a cookie. :P At least you look like you're trying to stop Punk#2 from making rude gestures.

Answers!

I just realized that I won't be home from class before noon so I'm going to post the answers now instead-

My Mystery Place is: Helmcken Alley off of Bastion Square in Victoria (next to Darcy's Pub)
Why the sounds of shuffling chains?: When the law courts were situated here and Judge Begbie ruled the roost in colonial Victoria, this alley walkway was a form of 'Death Row.' It was down this alley that offenders sentenced to death would walk down for their final doctor checks before being hung across the Square.
Who are the 2 punks?: That would be Shannon and Allison of the League of Notions. Stay out of trouble you two!

I Thought it was Bastion Square!

I'm originally from Victoria, so right away I recognized these images as none other than Bastion Square.

I liked the lighting in these pictures; the mysterious gloom of the square and its murky past was reflected in these images.

I can see Judge Matthew Begbie's ghost drifting across the square..hang em' all!
