Established in 1925, Emily Carr Institute (ECI) is an accredited post secondary institution in art, design, and media, with close to 2000 students from Canada and around the world. ECI is dedicated to fostering an educational environment that is professional, practice-oriented and at the same time rooted in history and critical theory. Our three undergraduate degrees in visual arts, media arts and design offer a careful balance of studio and academic programming. Our Master of Applied Arts degree focuses on the specialized skills and knowledge needed to link art, design and media to industry and professional practice while promoting critical reflection and intellectual inquiry.
ECI encourages its students to develop new and innovative ways of thinking and creating within a university-based undergraduate and graduate curriculum. At the same time, we encourage students to prepare themselves for life after school. We are a learning community devoted to excellence and innovation in visual arts, media arts and design. Our curriculum is flexible, personal, multidisciplinary and based on the learning needs of students.
Online Learning
ECI is a recognized leader in the development and delivery of both studio and theory credit courses in art, design, and media over the Internet. Our programs range from first-year courses in creative processes, visual communication, and art history to upper level courses in interactive media, photography, design history, and professional practices. In addition, there is a growing cluster of exceptional courses in First Nations art practices and art history. Our professors are nationally and internationally recognized artists, designers, writers, and academics who work in a broad range of media.
All of our online courses are credit courses and can be taken towards an Emily Carr Institute degree or transferred to another institution. This requires admission to ECI. For more information, visit online studies.
